SUMMARY:It’s Not Just One More Thing – It’s EVERYTHING: Aligning Connections\, MTSS\, and Personal Adult Advocacy to Support Every Early College Student
DESCRIPTION:Early Colleges offer both a powerful opportunity and a complex challenge: ensuring every student is truly known\, supported\, and monitored across four years and multiple college pathways. At Challenger\, we meet this challenge through a cohesive support system that intentionally aligns our Connections seminar course\, MTSS\, and Personal Adult Advocate (PAA) model. Connections is a credit-bearing course taken every semester\, designed with a tiered curriculum that builds college-ready and life-ready skills while monitoring academic and social-emotional growth. Each student is paired with a Personal Adult Advocate from before ninth grade through graduation\, creating continuity\, mentorship\, and proactive intervention. This session explores how this integrated model strengthens equity\, reduces fragmentation\, and ensures no student slips through the cracks.

SUMMARY:Teaching Critical Thinking in the Age of AI: Using AI Responsibly to Develop Critical Thinkers and Writers
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Critical Thinking in the Age of AI: Using AI Responsibly to Develop Critical Thinkers and WritersStudents can now generate an essay in seconds. So\, how do we ensure they are still doing the thinking? As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly common in schools\, educators face a new challenge: helping students use AI as a tool for learning instead of a shortcut around it. The question is no longer whether students will use AI\, but how we can design learning that encourages them to think critically\, write authentically\, and maintain ownership of their ideas. In this session\, participants will explore practical\, classroom-tested strategies for using AI to strengthen critical thinking\, support meaningful revision\, and amplify student voice. Through classroom examples\, student work samples\, and guided discussion\, attendees will examine how AI can be used as a tool for inquiry\, reflection\, feedback\, and analysis while keeping students at the center of the learning process.Participants will discover ways to design assignments and writing experiences that require students to evaluate information\, justify decisions\, critique AI-generated responses\, and engage in deep thinking that leads to stronger writing and deeper understanding. The session will also address responsible and ethical AI use\, including academic integrity\, bias awareness\, transparency\, and preserving student ownership of learning.Attendees will leave with practical resources\, classroom-ready strategies\, and a framework for integrating AI in ways that maintain rigor\, foster critical thinking\, and empower students to become thoughtful\, responsible communicators in an AI-rich world.\n

SUMMARY:Early Colleges Improve Mathematics College Readiness for Underprepared Students
DESCRIPTION:This session will present the results of a mixed methods experimental study that examined the impacts of the Early College High Schools in North Carolina on students’ success in college preparatory mathematics courses in the 9th through 11th grades\, disaggregated for academically prepared and underprepared students. The results show that the Early Colleges have improved students’ course-taking and success for all students\, but the impacts are larger for underprepared students. The analyses of classroom observations and interviews with mathematics teachers reveal that instruction in the ECHS displayed a mix of traditional approaches and rigorous student-centered instructional practices.

SUMMARY:Access by Design: Using Data to Expand Access to Opportunities for Underserved Students
DESCRIPTION:Dual enrollment and early college programs were created to expand access and opportunity — especially for students who have been historically underrepresented in advanced coursework and postsecondary pathways. However\, national trends continue to reveal inequities in participation\, with enrollment often concentrated among students who are already positioned for college success.\n\nThis collaborative workshop equips participants with a structured equity audit framework to examine enrollment\, performance\, and district-level data through an equity-centered lens. Teams will identify participation disparities and develop targeted\, data-driven strategies to strengthen supports for underrepresented students\, underserved communities\, and school districts with historically low participation rates. Participants will leave with actionable tools\, practical templates\, and implementation strategies designed to increase equitable access and student success.

SUMMARY:From Access to Belonging: Equity-Centered Student Supports in Early College
DESCRIPTION:Early College opens doors for students long pushed to the margins\, but access alone doesn’t guarantee belonging or success. In this collaborative workshop\, participants examine how advising\, mentoring\, family communication\, academic monitoring\, and behind-the-scenes coordination can either reproduce inequities or interrupt them. Using examples across different Early College sites\, we focus on identifying where programs “shake\,” the pressure points where hidden expectations hit hardest\, and followthrough depends too much on one person. Participants leave with a practical toolkit: a Support Check\, a Student Supports Map\, and an Action Plan to strengthen shared structures and consistent support across contexts.

SUMMARY:Beyond Dual Credit: Engaging Students Through Culture\, Support and Rigor
DESCRIPTION:This session will share several of the core principles of the Early College model that address instructional practices for dual credit instructors as well as examples of student support that allow for the critical thinking required in those dual credit courses. The supports in these dual credit courses encourage the higher level thinking of metacognition while giving them students agency in their own learning. The session will also reference the book The Disengaged Teen by Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop\, which addresses the crisis that “one of three students is highly engaged in school” (U.S. Census).

SUMMARY:Starting Early\, Succeeding in College: Student Voices from a Middle School Early College Pathway
DESCRIPTION:Early College programs often focus on structures and outcomes—but less often center the voices of students who experience them. This panel elevates student perspectives from the Dearborn Early College Kickoff (DECK)\, a middle school–launched pathway that prepares students for full-time Early College enrollment. Students from DECK’s first cohort\, now earning college credit in high school\, will share how early academic acceleration\, clear expectations\, family engagement\, and a paid learn-and-earn model shaped their readiness\, confidence\, and success. The session pairs student voice with outcome data to illustrate the impact of starting Early College preparation earlier.
